If you love cocktails like we do, you’ve probably been disappointed (at least occasionally) in the taste of your homemade drinks compared to those served by the “pro’s behind the bar”.
Why is that? At Wilks & Wilson we want to demystify this conundrum. While making cocktails requires attention to a few details, it’s really just little things that make the difference between a so-so cocktail and a GREAT one. And, by paying attention to these details, you can consistently make cocktails that rival or surpass those of the best mixologists.
We suggest you follow these five steps to ensure success:
1. Pay attention to what you stock in your Liquor Cabinet
Liquor stores put their best-distilled spirits on the top shelf for a reason. They represent their best spirits. Yes, they’re more expensive than the bottom shelf products, but they also have better quality ingredients. It is important to spend a little extra money on quality. A Martini made with a 5 dollar bottle of gin is going to be disappointing compared to one made with a 40 dollar bottle of gin.
2. Use Fresh Ingredients
The freshness of your ingredients makes a big difference. When possible, avoid bottled or canned and go fresh. This applies to fruit juices. Use a soda siphon instead of bottled soda water. And use natural, high-quality syrups like the mostly organic, all natural line of Wilks & Wilson elixirs.

3. Match the Drink and Glass Temperature
When making a cold drink, remember to chill the glass before pouring. It keeps the drink colder longer and improves the overall taste. The glass can be chilled beforehand in a freezer or by filling the glass with ice while you shake. Dump the ice out before the pour. The same theory applies to warm drinks. Warm up the glass beforehand by pouring some hot water inside while you’re preparing the ingredients.
4. Use Garnishes when appropriate
While not every drink requires garnish, they DO complete the drink’s presentation. Any Gin and Tonic is lost without the lime. And, who would drink a Martini sans the soft brine flavor of olives! Garnishes enhance a drink, period.
5. Measure everything
There is a reason bars use jiggers, and it’s not to cut down on waste. It ensures consistency in measurement. Many people like to impress with the “free” pour without the hassle of exact measuring. But measuring ensures that you are creating the cocktail in the way it was meant to be, with the right portions of each ingredient, to maintain the balance of the drink.
Wilks & Wilson knows everyone wants a cocktail with a “WOW” factor. By following these five easy steps every time you shake or stir your drink, you’ll get a consistent, high-quality cocktail.
And isn’t that what we all want?
